1. Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)

Most foreign visitors travelling to Kenya need an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before starting their journey. This requirement also applies to children and infants unless they fall under an exemption. Kenya's eTA is applied for online through the official government platform.

Citizens of the East African Partner States—Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda—are exempt from the eTA requirement under the current rules, subject to the applicable stay period. Certain other nationalities are also exempt, so travellers should check their eligibility before applying.

2. Passport

Travellers applying for the eTA should have a passport that is valid for at least six months from the planned date of arrival in Kenya and has at least one blank page.

3. Travel & Accommodation Details

The eTA application requires information such as your arrival and departure itinerary, accommodation booking details, contact information and a passport-style photograph or selfie. A payment method is also required for applications where a fee applies.

4. Yellow Fever Requirements

Travellers arriving in Kenya from countries where yellow fever is endemic should carry a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. The Kenyan Ministry of Health advises checking the relevant requirements before travel, particularly when your itinerary includes countries where yellow fever transmission occurs.

5. Apply in Good Time

Kenya's Directorate of Immigration says eTA applications are generally processed within three working days, but recommends submitting an application at least two weeks before travel to allow adequate processing time. Travellers should only travel once their eTA has been approved.
